Wig Hairstyles- 6 Historical Hairstyles To Try in your Wig Today

Wig Hairstyles- Whether you’re sticking with your own hair right now or have just invested in  human hair wigs to switch your look up from time to time, one thing can be agreed upon… there’s nothing more fun than trying out a new hairstyle or two!

Wig Hairstyles – wigs  are incredibly versatile and, with a bit of practice, surprisingly easy to work with. You’ll need to have quite deft hands but don’t worry if you’re not there yet, you’ll get there the more you try and practice.

Choosing which wig hairstyle to try out first will definitely be the hardest part of it all, so what about looking to the history books for a bit of inspiration? Here are just a couple of our very favourite hairstyles throughout history that could have you turning heads wherever you go. Enjoy!

Victory rolls

6 Historical Hairstyles To Try Today 1

Quite a tricky one to start with, perhaps, but once you’ve got this style down you’ll want to wear it again and again.

This was one of the most popular hairstyles during the 40s, characterised by big beautiful curls of hair framing the face. You’ll need to perfect your curling, pinning, rolling and backcombing skills and you’ll need to have a lot of hairspray within reach, but once you’ve given it a few gos you might be surprised at how easily it all comes together.

The beehive

6 Historical Hairstyles To Try Today 2

Apparently, this iconic hairstyle was created by stylist Margaret Vinci Heldt back in 1960, popularised by the likes of First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy and actress Audrey Hepburn. Sadly, Heldt died aged 98 back in 2016, but her legacy will live on as the beehive will always be a style of interest for women all over the world.

What’s particularly great about this hairstyle is that it doesn’t take a huge amount of effort to put together but when done right it gives you an instant glamorous edge and will elevate any look you have going on, guaranteed to make passersby turn their heads.

Finger waves

If you love nothing more than channelling your inner 20s siren, then you absolutely have to master the finger wave – ideal if you’ve invested in a shorter wig and aren’t quite sure how to style it just yet.

The look is a sleek one and perhaps not for the faint of heart so if you’re new to the idea of giving yourself different hairstyles on occasion, you may want to leave this one till last. Check out the likes of Bette Davis and Josephine Baker, both of whom helped to make this look popular.

The bob

6 Historical Hairstyles To Try Today 4

This is one style that has never really fallen out of fashion and probably never will. Apparently, it was first seen in 1015, when ballroom dancer Irene Castle chopped her locks off – which led to the rise of the Castle Bob.

As the Smithsonian Magazine explains, it was a relatively controversial style for the day, with many a hairdresser refusing to cut their customer’s hair if this was what was requested. But women got around this by going to the barber’s instead, who duly obliged! Once the hairdressers realised this style wasn’t going anywhere, they soon changed their tune.

The Gibson Girl

This is a bun style based on ink drawings by artist Charles Gibson during the 1890s, a truly historical hairstyle indeed! If you’ve got thick hair, you should find this an easy style to emulate, but if you haven’t don’t worry – you’ve always got your new wig to rely on to help you achieve any hairstyle you want.

The idea is to create a romantic, soft look with your hair, with the bun perched on top and lots of lovely ringlets falling down around your face. If you like a slightly messier look, this could be the one for you.

The whale spout

If you’re a big fan of the 80s, you’ve got to give the whale spout hairstyle a try, not least because of the relatively comical name. Check out singer-songwriter and actress Debbie Gibson, who really made the look popular and had us all reaching for our scrunchies to try and get the look for ourselves.
