How To Get The Best From Your Wig

There are some incredible modern luxury wigs available and if you decide to buy one you’ll want to make sure you’re getting the most from your new hairpiece so that you look fabulous every time you wear it.

However, one of the keys to wearing a wig and no one being able to tell is putting it on correctly and styling it well, which can be a bit of a learning curve if you’ve never worn a wig before, or very infrequently.

Luckily, Allure recently shared some advice on how to wear a wig without making any faux pas after speaking to one expert in this area.

Cliff Vmir, a hair stylist who appears in the digital BET series Wig Out, shared some of his top tips with the publication, as well as some mistakes people commonly make when they’re wearing wigs for the first time.

When you come to buy your wig, it can be easy to get carried away with the colour and style of hairpiece, but you need to pay particular attention to whether it has a thin lace closure. Why is this so important? According to Cliff it’s because thin lace “melts and lays better”. He added: “With thin lace you won’t see any demarcation.”

Essentially, this is all about making sure it looks like your natural scalp once it’s on, not as though you’re wearing a wig.

If you’re wearing a wig to change up your existing style, you need to make sure that your real hair is completely out of the way.

You can’t just stuff it under a wig and hope that it’ll look natural, you need to do some preparation. In fact, you need to braid your hair in cornrows, making sure these are small braids and that they all go straight back. This will give you a flat foundation on which to attach your wig.

Don’t forget about your baby hair – or wispy hair – and make sure you don’t overstyle it. You might be tempted to leave these bits on show, but Cliff advises against it, instead insisting you should just slick them back with some edge control.

“When you’re wearing hair that’s not yours, you have to make it look as natural as possible without doing too much. Less is more,” he asserted.

Another mistake that’s best avoided is choosing a wig that’s in an unflattering colour for your skin tone. You might feel as though it’s a great idea to go from blonde to black, or the other way around, but make sure you’ll suit your new look first.

Cliff also advises thinking about your job, what clothes you usually wear and how everything goes together for your look.

Earlier this month, Refinery29 revealed that many top stylists use wigs and extensions for their celebrity clients.

Kendall Dorsey, who’s behind the luscious locks of the likes of Solange and Lizzo, told the publication that he uses hairpieces for a lot of his clients, but that they’re particularly great for those who like to “change their look up often”.
