10 Essential Wig Maintenance & Care Tips

Investing in luxury human hair wigs can be quite pricey – but you don’t want to skimp in this regard, or you’ll end up with an inferior product that makes everyone look at you for all the wrong reasons. Imagine the horror!

It always pays to go high end when it comes to your new wig but because you will perhaps be spending more than you at first anticipated, you do need to know how best to take care of the product or you’ll soon find it starts to show its age. Here are some expert tips from the team here at Goldea to ensure your wig really stands the test of time.

How to wash your wig

Luckily, it’s not difficult to maintain and wash your wig, but you do need to be careful and pay it lots of attention. The majority of these wigs have been made using hair that’s been dyed and then processed in such a way as to remove the cuticle. As such, you need to handle it very gently indeed as the processing makes the hairs themselves a lot more fragile.

Only use hair products that have been designed for these kinds of wigs, as chemicals in other products could cause damage to the wig and reduce its lifespan.

How often you need to wash your wig will depend on how often you wear it. Aim to clean it at least once a week if you’re wearing it each day, but remember that every time you wash it you will decrease its lifespan so don’t do this any more than is strictly necessary.

Before washing, comb it out as gently as you can to get rid of any tangles, starting at the tips and working towards the base of the cap. Using a conditioner can help to loosen any really stubborn tangles.

Avoid submerging the wig in a basin of water as this can cause tangles quite easily – the exact opposite of what you want. Get the tap running and then put the wig under the water, using cool water. Once it’s wet all over, squeeze it gently to get rid of any excess water but don’t wring or twist the hair.

Use a small amount of special wig shampoo and apply it evenly all over the wig, smoothing it from the base to the tips. Again, be as gentle as you can! Then rinse carefully, with no rubbing, twisting or wringing, and continue until all the shampoo has been washed out. Repeat the process with some conditioner, leaving it in for five minutes to really take effect.

To dry your wig, it’s best to let it do so naturally on a wig stand as this will help to protect the hair. You can use rollers if you like to set it in shape and you can also use a hair dryer on its lowest setting – but air drying is arguably the best method if you want your wig to last.
